Expository writing is real or could be real.  Textbooks and informational books and articles are examples of Expository writing.  Expository writing needs transition words to help it move smoothly from one idea to the next.  Words such as, First, Next, Then, and In conclusion, are found in Expository writing.
Writing down directions and recipies are both examples of Expository writing.
First, make a right turn at the corner of US1 and Hand Ave. Then travel west for 2 miles until you see the McDonald's. Next, turn left and then make a sharp right onto Sea Street. Proceed to the dead end...
First, you add 3 cups of flour. Then, mix in 1 cup of butter and 2 eggs.  Beat together until smooth...
Most often in 4th grade the Expository will be a Personal Expository.  A student will be asked to explain how to make or build something.  They use their own experiences to write the essay.  Keeping this in mind it is a good idea to have students build things throughout the year. It can be as simple as creating atoms out of gum drops and toothpicks. Today's students lack experience building things. Most parents don't allow their children to "play" with power tools. And most foods come into the home already prepared.  Experiences must be provided and students must learn to write step by step directions if they are to be successful with Expository writing prompts.
