PLACE VALUE and NUMBER SENSE
Place Value is the most difficult concept for children to understand. I encourage every teacher to use lots of manipulatives to solidify place value before attempting to teach higher level math.
The use of Chip Trading is one strategy I have had success with. The actual cutting apart of rods and flats as students add and subtract larger numbers has also helped students understand place value.
