GEOMETRY
The study of geometry should start when a child is very young. A two year old can sort by colors and then by shapes. It is important to use the proper name of each 2D figure and then move on to the geometric solids. Just a reminder that a diamond is not a 2D shape. You want to call it a rhombus because when the little ones go off to school they find out that a diamond is not a math term.
After sorting, children should start to trace the shapes and look at what is the same and what is different about each. Play "I Spy" with your children and have them locate different shapes daily. You can also have them search through magazines to find shapes. Hands-On experiences must come first!
